Whilst at University Laura Nathan was always drawn towards the fusion of textiles practice and fine art, so much so that she transferred from a Fine Art degree in London to Embroidery degree in Manchester where she felt she could get the best of both worlds. Laura was never really concerned with the accurate and traditional elements of traditional embroidery but instead loved the freedom of using both machine and hand embroidery in a more artistic way. She really enjoyed being able to adopt stitch, collage and drawing either simultaneously or individually to create her works of art. Since graduating in 2007 Laura embarked on a community arts career and it was only after 6 years having missed her own creativity that she decided to dedicate time to creating her own artwork again.
She currently has two different styles; paper-stitched artworks and hand stitched linear drawings and she enjoyed creating commissions and also creating pieces to sell at art markets. Her individual pieces of art work and hand made cards are strongly influenced by her textiles and fine art background and she enjoys challenging the boundaries of traditional embroidery and mixing up materials. She layers recycled, vintage and fabrics with hand made papers to create bold and quirky images. More of her artwork can be seen online, and she hopes viewers enjoy looking through her artwork. Laura really enjoys playing with the qualities of paper and combining new and old, neutral and bold and rigid and delicate pieces together to create images which she can then embellish with embroidery.
