From the mid-80s to the early 90s Clarence Stewart worked as an illustrator and commercial artist for Scripture Press Publishing, the Baptist Sunday School Board, Augsburg Fortress Publishing, Victor Books, the United Methodist Publishing Co and several book publishers. Stewart later signed with a publisher in Alabama (in Tuscaloosa) and began publishing limited edition prints and sports art. His artwork on sports is represented on AuburnArt.com and CollegeFootballArt.com. This artist has been drawing and painting since he was a child — and though he has not gone full time as an artist, he hopes that a time is coming when he will be able to rely on his talent solely for his income. That notwithstanding, he won 1st place in the 2010 Energen Art Competition in the wildlife category. This competition took place in Birmingham and brought together artists from far and wide. This artist is no stranger to accolades and awards.
In 2005, his painting of a canvasback duck won the Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest. This piece was featured on the Alabama Waterfowl Stamp of 2006 and 2007. In 2009, his painting of a northern pintail drake also won the Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest. This piece was featured on the Alabama Waterfowl Stamp of 2010 and 2011. His greatest influence was Rockwell Norman, but his art has also been influenced by wildlife artists, Carl Brender and Robert Bateman. Stewart attended local schools, while growing up. He attended Jefferson Davis Junior College and after completing his studies, he was first employed as a graphics artist by St. Regis Paper Company for a short time.
